It was a tale of two pitchers in the first Division II semifinal game between Kauai and Waianae.
Jumping right into the second inning, after losing control of a couple of batters, Kauai starting pitcher Kapono Sullivan got out of a bases loaded jam to keep things scoreless.
In the bottom of the second inning, Waianae pitcher Shysten Nagasako continued his strong start, striking out his third batter of the game.
To start the scoring off, in the bottom of the third, Kauai’s Austin Renaud bounced a single to left to bring home a runner as Kauai took the lead, 1-0.
Fast forward to the seventh inning, after going scoreless throughout the game, Waianae came alive to tie the game up at 1-1, after a series of bunts.
But with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Kauai’s Joshua Rego responded with a game-winning single through the infield to put Kauai in the HHSAA Division II State Championship game by a score of 2-1.
