In a thrilling Friday night showdown under the lights of the Moanalua grass football field, the Mules edged out a 21-7 win over the Menehunes and improve to 2-0 on the year.
In the first quarter, Moanalua set the tone as capitalized on a 50-yard kick return scoring the game’s first touchdown. Quarterback Tayden-Evan Kaawa scrambled outside the pocket and found a wide open Jayce Bareng for a 5-yard touchdown.
However, Leilehua was quick to respond. In the second quarter, Camren Flemister, a force to be reckoned with throughout the game, showcased his explosiveness with a remarkable 67-yard run, propelling Leilehua onto the scoreboard. Kicker Maci Rivera’s successful conversion kick brought the score to a tie at 7-7.
Leilehua’s momentum didn’t stop there. With 7:54 remaining in the second quarter, Cole Northington broke free for a 38-yard touchdown, giving the Mules the lead. Rivera’s extra-point kick sailed through the uprights, to make the score, 14-7.
The Mules punched in one more touchdown in the middle of the fourth quarter and hold off the Na Menehune. The Na Menehune fall to 0-2 and will look to earn their first win of the season at Punahou School on Saturday, August 26th at 3:00pm. Leilehua will take on Campbell next on Saturday, August 26th at 6:30pm.
