Hawaii sports journalism has lost a true legend with the passing of longtime writer Cindy Luis on Sunday. A pioneering force in the industry, Luis made history as the first female sports editor of a daily newspaper in Hawaii, breaking barriers and paving the way for women in media.
For more than 40 years, Cindy was the heart and soul of Hawaii Athletics coverage, with a special focus on UH Men’s Volleyball. Her incredible contributions were honored in 2024 when she was inducted into the UH Sports Circle of Honor, forever cementing her legacy in Hawaii sports.
Our deepest thoughts are with Cindy’s family, friends, and all who were touched by her work—especially her son and ESPN Honolulu’s own Tiff Wells. Her passion, dedication, and impact will never be forgotten.
In 2024, we honored and celebrated Cindy Luis by inducting her into our Circle of Honor. Share in the memories with us, and her impact on the media industry as a true trailblazer. Rest in Aloha, Cindy. pic.twitter.com/ny8gNh6dWT
