The University of Hawai‘i football program has officially named Chad Kapanui as its new quarterbacks coach, head coach Timmy Chang announced Thursday.
Kapanui, a Roosevelt High School graduate and former UH quarterback and linebacker, returns to Mānoa after a successful coaching tenure at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas. As offensive coordinator for one of the nation’s top high school football programs, Kapanui helped develop record-setting quarterback Micah Alejado, who is now UH’s projected starting QB.
The hire reunites Kapanui with Alejado, who flourished under his guidance at Bishop Gorman, leading the Gaels to national prominence with Alejado setting numerous passing records.
Kapanui takes over for longtime assistant Dan Morrison, who retired following the 2024 season. Morrison had previously coached both Chang and Kapanui during their playing days at UH.
This addition continues the trend of strengthening the staff with local talent, as Kapanui’s leadership and familiarity will be valuable as the team builds momentum for the 2025 season.
