Elite teams from Coast to Coast dominated Day 1 of the ‘Iolani Girls Prep Classic basketball tournament Thursday, with their size, speed and athleticism on full display against three local Hawai’i squads.
Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.), ranked No. 2 in the nation by ESPN and No. 5 by MaxPreps, blew past defending OIA champion Campbell, 70-21. Sidwell Friends (Washington, D.C.), No. 5 in ESPN and No. 9 in MaxPreps, handled 2023 ILH runner-up Kamehameha, 70-40. And Clovis West (Fresno, Calif.), ranked No. 7 in California, took care of Kahuku, 75-46.
Host team ‘Iolani, meanwhile, breezed past Kailua, 72-15. The four-time defending state champion Raiders (11-0) will play Sierra Canyon (7-0) in Friday’s feature semifinal game at 8 p.m. Sidwell Friends (2-1) will face Clovis West (10-1) in the other semifinal at 6:30 p.m.
Sidwell Friends 70, Kamehameha 40
Jordyn Jackson scored a game-high 18 points, Kendall Dudley added 17 points and Zania Socka contributed 10 points as the Quakers grabbed control early and kept the Warriors (7-1) at bay.
Sidwell Friends led, 16-9, after one period, 36-17 at halftime and 58-23 entering the fourth. Nihoa Dunn scored 10 points to lead Kamehameha.
Clovis West 75, Kahuku 46
Athena Tomlinson scored 20 points and Ariyah Smith and Keegan Medeiros each added 12 points to help the Golden Eagles get past the Red Raiders (2-3).
Clovis West led 19-6 after one period, 42-26 at halftime and 60-38 entering the fourth.
Tu’ua Cravens and Makana Kameke’eaina each scored 12 points to lead Kahuku.
Sierra Canyon 70, Campbell 21
The Trailblazers used a 22-0 run spanning the second and third periods to spring past the Sabers (4-2).
Sierra Canyon went on a 17-2 run during the first period to build a 19-6 lead, but Taysia Molina-Schulte drained a 3-pointer from the left corner to cut it to 21-11 early in the second. But the Trailblazers used an effective transition game to close out the period with an 11-0 run to lead 32-11 at halftime.
Sierra Canyon then began the third period with another 11-0 run to stretch the lead to 43-11, and finished the game with a 23-point fourth period to win going away.
Jerzy Robinson and Izela Arenas each scored 21 points and Mac Randolph added 18 points for the Trailblazers.
Tehani Docktor scored 10 points to lead Campbell.

‘Iolani 72, Kailua 15
Kanoe Hanohano finished with a game-high 11 points and all 10 of her teammates got into the scorebook for the Raiders, who led 20-2 after one period, 39-3 at halftime and 50-10 entering the fourth.
Kiani Ho’olulu scored eight points to lead the Surfriders (2-2).
