In his senior season, he was named a second-team All-American with 102 catches, 1,290 yards, and 17 touchdowns. He holds the record for the most all-purpose yards in Hawaii’s history with 5,461 yards.

After college, Owens was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2005 before transitioning to the Canadian Football League (CFL) in 2009. He found success with the Toronto Argonauts from 2010 to 2015, winning the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player award in 2012 with 3,863 all-purpose yards and helping the team win the Grey Cup. Owens was also a four-time CFL All-Star.
